In the lyrical tapestry of John Lennon's "So This Is Christmas," a profound resonance captures the essence of our world today. As I reflect on the state of our existence, it becomes evident that this song encapsulates the collective experience of humanity and our current trajectory in the grand journey of life as God's creation.

A poignant line that resonates deeply with me is, "Another year has gone, and what have you done?" Surveying the bewildering state of the world, I observe God's people akin to lost sheep wandering aimlessly, oblivious to the readily available roadmap—CHRIST—that lies before us.

The season unfolds with extravagant spending, overflowing supermarket trolleys, ephemeral festivities, and an endless stream of indulgence.

Yet, amidst the merriment, the majority celebrate a figure shrouded in mystery—a sacrificial lamb who not only laid down His life but walked willingly to the slaughter. That figure is Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, heralded in the words of the Prophet Isaiah as "Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

If you find yourself pondering the relevance of these words, ask yourself: Do you truly know the essence of the celebration? Do you comprehend why this person is worth celebrating? Do you share a personal connection with the celebrated one? If your response is affirmative to one or two of these queries, your understanding remains incomplete without addressing the final question.

As the apostle Paul asserts in Ephesians 4:13, completeness is found in unity, faith, and knowledge of the Son of God. A personal relationship with the celebrant is the key to this wholeness.

For those answering negatively, I implore you: Jesus Christ is the raison d'être of this season. He is the inspiration behind your celebrations, uniting friends, family, and colleagues. His desire is a profound connection with you, knocking at the door of your heart, yearning to share a meaningful communion.

The repercussions of turning away from this invitation are substantial, as highlighted in Hebrews 9:27. The love of Christ is boundless and is the remedy the world craves.

For those claiming familiarity, ponder the haunting question posed in the song: "Another year has gone, and what have you done?" Reflect on your actions and purpose. Are you actively pursuing your divine destiny, or merely passing time on Earth?

Let this not be construed as judgment but as a soul-searching introspection. I, too, grapple with these questions daily, seeking God's mercy and grace to navigate a righteous path.

Are you authentically tethered to Christ Jesus? As you revel in festive moments with loved ones, spare a thought for the less fortunate and those ensnared in the throes of conflict. Spread Christ's love and embody it, for, as John 15:13 declares, "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends."

Christ has already laid down His life to manifest His love; what sacrificial act will characterize your love for Christ and humanity? Wishing you a profoundly joyous Christmas, blissful holidays, and a purposeful 2024.
